    Plumbing Work in the U.S.

Most people have occasion sometime in their life to require the services of a plumber. Whether it is a clogged drain or a major leak, a plumber can provide the needed service to fix your problem.

While you are aware of the instance in which you may need a plumber, you might not realize the specialized training they need to complete to become a licensed plumber. Residential plumbers normally train through attending either a technical school or a community college. Many start out as apprentices, which mean they work with a licensed plumber, to learn the trade.

There are no licensing requirements on a national level however, individual states require licensing. The requirements may differ from state to state but normally it requires a period of on-the-job training in order to gain experience. After that, a test needs to be passed which will test how well they know the trade and codes.

When you need a plumber for repairing an existing pipe or installing a new system, such as sprinklers, make sure that you choose one that is licensed. Sometimes in your haste to get something repaired or completed, you may hire someone without checking them out. You should always make sure they are licensed to do work in the state you live in, because as with any service, there are con artists who will take advantage of the homeowner.

If you are planning to install a Jacuzzi or a swimming pool, you will need a plumber to install the pipes correctly. This requires the job be done to certain specifications and most cities will inspect the job to make sure it is done to code. Many of these types of projects as well as remodeling a kitchen or bathroom require blueprints so the layout of the pipes is done correctly to forestall problems.

Another requirement of plumbing is using the right type of pipes for the job. Home water systems use copper, steel, and plastic pipe. They have to be put together correctly or you may develop a leak, which can be quite costly. Not to mention having to dig the pipe up to replace it can be quite costly

Using the recommended pipe for the type of plumbing that is being installed is very important. A lot of pipe used today is PVC. It is easy to install and easy to repair when the need arises.

When you build a new house, a plumber will come with blueprints that show the location of all the pipes that will be in the house. By planning where the appliances will be and the location of all kitchen and bathroom facilities as well as any extras that you may want, your home will be set up for everything you want to include.

Whether the plumbing job you are contracting is for remodeling, repair, or new additions to your home, you will need to make sure the plumber is licensed, has good referenced, and gives you an estimate on everything to be done before starting the job. Emphasize that the price you are being quoted should be the finished price, unless you have any changes that are made during the job.
